Jesse Jackson Jr. Will Be Wearing Pinstripes

Former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., the civil rights leader's son who once dreamed of becoming mayor or senator, and his wife, former 7th Ward Ald. Sandi Jackson, were tripped up by a taste for luxury that was bankrolled with $750,000 from campaign funds.

[Daily Skimm] Former Illinois congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. was sentenced to 30 months in prison yesterday, after pleading guilty in February to spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign funds on personal things — like $1500 on a cashmere cape, a “holistic retreat” to Martha’s Vineyard, and Michael Jackson’s fedora. You know, regular business expenses.

He has until November 1st to begin serving his prison sentence. Worth noting that his membership in the plutocracy entitles Jackson to a get-out-of-jail card within five months if he behaves like a good little boy. Sandi Jackson will serve her sentence after Jesse is released.

So, you ask, will the Jackson's have to repay the monies they pilfered from their campaing fund?

[Chicago Tribune] In another break, Jackson Jr. won't have to return $750,000 to his campaign fund, but must pay a $750,000 forfeiture as agreed when he pleaded guilty in February.

Additionally, her plea deal called for her to pay $168,550, representing unpaid taxes, but the judge ordered her to pay only $22,000 in restitution. The sum represents money she misused from her own political accounts.

The 48-year-old is the son of civil rights leader the Rev. Jesse Jackson and was once considered a rising political star. No doubt we'll see him again.
